about

Words by Kevin Hutchings; music by Mike Bon Jorno

While driving past a cemetery in Prince George recently, Kevin’s partner Lisa suddenly turned to him and said, “When I die, whatever you do, don’t bury me in a graveyard!”—and this song was born. At first it seemed like the lyrics might lend themselves to an upbeat, major-key melody—something akin to John Prine’s classic work of musical comedy, “Please Don’t Bury Me” (which is an acknowledged inspiration). But given the gravitas of some of the lyrics, Mike had a better idea for the music…

lyrics

Don’t bury me in a graveyard
There’s too many dead people there
And though it’s true I’ll be dead too
Please scatter my ashes elsewhere.
Place them upon the blue ocean
Or onto a green mountainside,
But don’t bury me in a graveyard
Where the restless spirits reside.

You won’t need to buy me a tombstone;
You won’t need to dig me a grave.
Just place my remains on the lakes and the plains
To be gathered by wind and by wave.
With respect to the old undertaker,
Who renders a service profound,
I’d rather my bones were with old Davy Jones
Than in a pine box underground.

Some people say there’s a heaven,
A kingdom of bliss in the sky.
Other folks say we just pass away,
And nothing remains when we die.
But Nature’s Grand Reveille is beckoning me
Like a soldier to the drum and the fife,
So don’t bury me in a graveyard
And ruin my sweet afterlife.
